SENATOBIA, Miss. (Sept. 23, 2009) – ZIP System® roof and wall sheathing, manufactured by Huber Engineered Woods LLC, is being used to build a new state-of-the-art teaching facility for the Division of Nursing at Northwest Mississippi Community College (NMCC). Specifier, Doug Thornton, AIA, LEED AP and founder of Architectural & Engineering Resources for Construction, PLLC (AERC) selected the ZIP System® products because they deliver moisture and weather resistant performance required to address the wet and humid conditions prevalent in the Southeastern United States.
“Our design team feels the ZIP System roof and wall sheathing will provide the building envelope to meet our performance goals, which include structural standards, weatherproofing, and thermal and moisture control,” said Thornton. “In addition, the ZIP System roof and wall sheathing along with high R-value insulation, daylighting and occupancy sensors, efficient HVAC systems and other cutting-edge building products will make this nursing school very sustainable.”
This two-story, 41,000-square-foot facility will feature instructional classrooms, lecture halls, administrative space, labs and mock hospital rooms with computer-controlled simulated patients for the most realistic training possible. NMCC was founded in 1928, so it is also critical that the new nursing school match the brick veneer and historical detailing of other buildings on campus.
The ZIP System® wall sheathing with a built-in protective barrier is a structural wall panel, water-resistive barrier and air barrier all-in-one, providing a tight building envelope and superior moisture resistance during and after the construction. The Department of Energy recognizes that air barriers help prevent air leakage homes, which can account for 30 percent or more of a homes heating and cooling costs. ZIP System® tape is used on both the roof and wall products and provides moisture resistance for seams, valleys and ridges, can help reduce air leaks as recommended by the Seal and Insulate with the ENERGY STAR® effort, and is code recognized as window and door flashing tape when used with ZIP System wall sheathing (ESR-2227).
ZIP System® roof panels have a built-in protective moisture barrier and eliminate the need for felt paper and H-clips. A code recognized structural panel and underlayment all-in-one, ZIP System roof panels prevent expensive rework due to torn felt, and shingles or tiles can be applied directly to the panels. Since the system is faster to install than traditional methods and provides an instant 120-day rough dry-in, it will allow builders to schedule subcontractors sooner, ultimately completing the project in less time.
Both ZIP System roof and wall sheathing provide a 120-day exposure guarantee and are backed by limited 15-year system and 30-year panel warranties.
