Florida Builder Selects ZIP System® Roof And Wall Sheathing
For “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” Build
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 23, 2009) – Myddelton Parker Builders of Tallahassee, Fla. selected Huber Engineered Woods LLC’s ZIP System roof and wall sheathing for the April 12 “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” build due to its moisture resistance and quick installation properties. ProBuild Tallahassee supplied Myddelton Parker Builders with 5,000-square feet of ZIP System roof and wall sheathing to construct the home for a family who has five adopted and physically-challenged children from China, and a father who was battling brain cancer.
“The ZIP System roof and wall sheathing provides superior moisture resistance which is essential on builds in Florida. Due to the nature of the show, we needed building materials that could help us complete the home as fast as possible, yet maintain reliability,” stated Jake Myddelton, co-owner and construction manager of Myddelton Parker Builders. “Since ZIP System roof and wall sheathing combines the sheathing with a water-resistive barrier, it eliminates the step of applying housewrap or felt. The product is basically foolproof, and it provides an instant dry-in, so we were able to let subcontractors work before the actual roof and walls were completed.”
ZIP System roof and wall sheathing do not require felt or housewrap, due to the fact that the ZIP System panels are code recognized as wood structural panels with protective barriers combined in one product. The ZIP System panels and ZIP System™ tape combination expedites installation, prevents rework and provides an instant 120-day rough dry-in, allowing builders to schedule subcontractors sooner to complete the house in less time.
“ZIP System roof and wall sheathing also provide a tight envelope which helped us achieve the EPA's Energy Star Partner Certification and the Florida Green Building Council's Certification for this home,” stated John Parker, co-owner and operations manager of Myddelton Parker Builders.
ZIP System roof sheathing is a structural panel that has a built-in Precipitek™ moisture barrier, and ZIP System wall sheathing is a structural panel with a built-in Stormex™ water-resistive barrier. The seams of the panels are taped using the ZIP System™ tape to create moisture resistance for seams, valleys and ridges. The combination of these factors provides reduced air flow and offers superior moisture protection.
“Another factor we like about ZIP System roof and wall sheathing is that since the moisture resistance is built-in and they don’t require housewrap, the appearance of the house during construction looked clean and more upscale than with traditional housewrap and OSB (oriented strand board),” stated Parker. “We really enjoy working with the products and will continue recommending them as options to our customers.”
