Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Selects Huber Engineered Woods ZIP System® Roof and Wall Sheathing and AdvanTech® Flooring for a Second Season
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (October 12, 2010) – Huber Engineered Woods LLC is contributing ZIP System® roof and wall panels and AdvanTech® flooring for more than 20 homes during Season Eight of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” For the second year, the “Extreme” team will count on its preferred roof, wall and subflooring partners, ZIP System® roof and wall sheathing and AdvanTech® flooring, to complete each home on the Emmy-award winning reality series show’s accelerated building and shooting schedule.
"With only 106 hours to complete each energy-efficient build, we depend on quality products that can be installed quickly. Thanks to the speed and ease of installation of ZIP System roof and wall sheathing, we are confident that we can finish each home on schedule,” said Anthony Dominici, executive producer of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” “Our theme for this year, ‘Extreme Like You Have Never Seen,’ would not be possible without the commitment from Huber Engineered Woods and its ZIP System roof and wall sheathing and AdvanTech flooring for all 22 homes being built this year for the show.”
As structural panels with built-in protective barriers that eliminate housewrap and felt, ZIP System roof and wall sheathing can be installed quickly. In addition, AdvanTech flooring delivers water resistance benefits that also facilitate easy installation regardless of the weather conditions.
“During the construction of our first build in Baltimore, Md., we struggled with extremely wet conditions from a bad storm that threatened the build before we were able to install the roof,” said Dominici. “Despite the wind and rain, ZIP System and AdvanTech products were able to withstand the harsh conditions. We were able to experience the moisture-resistant benefits of these products first-hand during the build.”
ZIP System® Roof Sheathing
ZIP System roof panels have a built-in moisture barrier and eliminate the need for felt paper (2.1.2) and H-clips. A code-recognized structural panel and underlayment all-in-one, ZIP System roof panels prevent expensive rework due to torn felt, and shingles or tiles can be applied directly to the panels. Since ZIP System® panels are faster to install than traditional methods and provide an instant 120-day rough dry-in, builders can schedule subcontractors sooner, ultimately completing the house in less time.
ZIP System® Wall Sheathing
The ZIP System wall sheathing with a built-in water-resistive barrier is a structural wall panel, moisture barrier and air barrier all-in-one, providing a tight building envelope and superior moisture resistance during and after the construction. The Department of Energy recognizes that air barriers help prevent air leakage in homes, which can account for 30 percent or more of a home’s heating and cooling costs. The ZIP System™ tape gun is used to install both the roof and wall products with the ZIP System™ tape, which provides moisture resistance for seams, valleys and ridges, and is code recognized as window and door flashing tape when used with ZIP System® wall sheathing (ESR-2227). “Even in the best of conditions, ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ is working under tremendous timelines,” said Charlie Robinson, ZIP System general manager. “ZIP System products allow builders to quickly frame a house with full confidence that the walls stay dry regardless of weather, as a water-resistant barrier is fused directly onto the panels during the manufacturer process.”
With ZIP System products there is no chance for water to get between the ZIP System barrier and the sheathing, unlike traditional air barrier assemblies where the water can penetrate and collect behind the housewrap.
AdvanTech® Flooring
AdvanTech flooring and sheathing are known for moisture resistance and unsurpassed quality, as well as industry-leading strength and stiffness based on ESR-1785 (Evaluation Service Report) standards that exceed PS2 performance standards used by competitors. A combination of innovative resin technology and manufacturer engineering makes this product unique in the field of structural panels, and AdvanTech flooring is the only subflooring to hold the ESR certification. The AdvanTech® brand now features panel graphics including the ESR-1785 certification on the front of the panel, a Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) logo to showcase its environmental commitment, a fastening guide for quicker installation, and bi-lingual instructions to ensure 1/8-inch spacing gap. The flooring is available in 19/32-inch, 23/32-inch, 7/8-inch, 1-inch and 1 1/8-inch thicknesses. AdvanTech flooring is backed by the Huber Engineered Woods 50-year fully-transferrable warranty. “Our goal is to help the ‘Extreme’ team build homes for very special families quickly, yet without sacrificing quality for speed,” said Scott Long, AdvanTech general manager. “We are happy to provide products such as our high-quality AdvanTech floor panels that are also safe for the homes residents, as our products contain no urea formaldehyde and are categorized as low-emitting materials.”
All of Huber Engineered Woods’ mills are certified under the SFI program, promoting sustainable forestry practices through procurement programs and research initiatives, as well as logger and landowner outreach. In addition, Huber Engineered Woods has earned the NAHB Research Center Green Approved mark for its ZIP System roof and wall sheathing and AdvanTech flooring. This approval verifies that ZIP System roof and wall sheathing and AdvanTech flooring are eligible to contribute points toward the certification of a building under the ANSI-approved National Green Building Standard™.
