ZIP System® roof and wall sheathing, manufactured by Huber Engineered Woods LLC, is being used to build a new state-of-the-art teaching facility for the Division of Nursing at Northwest Mississippi Community College (NMCC). Specifier, Doug Thornton, AIA, LEED AP and founder of Architectural & Engineering Resources for Construction, PLLC (AERC) selected the ZIP System® products because they deliver moisture and weather resistant performance required to address the wet and humid conditions prevalent in the Southeastern United States. “Our design team feels the ZIP System roof and wall sheathing will provide the building envelope to meet our performance goals, which include structural standards, weatherproofing, and thermal and moisture control,” said Thornton. “In addition, the ZIP System roof and wall sheathing along with high R-value insulation, daylighting and occupancy sensors, efficient HVAC systems and other cutting-edge building products will make this nursing school very sustainable.”

Harry and Julia Kurtz-Frugoli have traveled a long and challenging road to platinum LEED for Homes certification status on their 3,086-square foot home in Central, S.C. When they began construction in 2007, LEED for Homes standards in South Carolina were less than a year old and no home had been certified at any level. In fact, at that point there were only about 1,000 homes certified nationwide since the residential LEED for Homes program was established by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) in 2006. The Kurtz-Frugoli’s contractor, Paradise Upstate made a critical decision at the beginning to use ZIP System® roof and wall sheathing to build what is now one of the few LEED certified homes in the Southeast and only the second with platinum status in South Carolina.
